The Apex Legends Cipher preview highlights Crypto’s battery-powered drone, Akimbo Wingman, and Strongholds. Learn about the upcoming season’s new features and limitations.

The Apex Legends Cipher season preview highlights changes to Crypto’s drone mechanics, the Akimbo Wingman, and the Strongholds system. These are announced features for the upcoming season and should not be treated as patch notes for the current live game. The common thread throughout the preview is decision-making around intel and loot. Monitoring an area with Crypto, evaluating the use of dual Wingmans, and calculating the risk of opening a Stronghold could influence teams’ choices in the new season.

Crypto’s Drone Will Now Be Battery-Powered

Under the announced system, Crypto’s drone will run on a battery instead of a cooldown. Players will be able to retrieve and redeploy the drone. Sentry Mode will mark enemies within its field of view for the team, while the EMP will stand out with its one-button activation. These changes may encourage players to reassess the drone’s position instead of deploying it once and forgetting about it. A location chosen to monitor an area may no longer provide the same value once the team advances. Understanding the battery and redeployment mechanics could therefore be one of the first things to learn.

Sentry Mode should not be viewed as a system that provides unlimited vision. The preview states that the drone marks enemies it can see. When sharing intel with teammates, it is better to consider both the drone’s position and the area it can actually monitor.

Akimbo Wingman: Dual Weapons, a New Learning Curve

Another notable addition in the Cipher preview is the Akimbo option, which allows players to wield two Wingmans at once. The dual-weapon setup does not automatically mean twice the damage or stronger performance at every range. Such an assessment requires the final weapon stats and live gameplay conditions. When the new season launches, consider spending time learning how the weapons feel instead of testing them for the first time under the pressure of ranked matches. Comparing the new handling style with the single-weapon rhythm you are used to will be more useful than making a choice based solely on promotional footage. It would not be appropriate to provide definitive damage, accuracy, or fire-rate figures at this stage.

When Opening Strongholds, Consider the Alarm as Well as the Loot

Strongholds will offer valuable loot, but they will take time to open. The alarm that sounds during the process will also reveal your location to nearby teams. Defensive structures and Hardlight elements will play a role in these areas. The tactical decision here is not limited to asking, “What is inside?” The team’s level of preparedness, nearby activity, and who will watch each direction during the opening process will also matter. Giving away your position in exchange for valuable loot may not be equally advantageous in every situation. As a starting strategy, you can assign roles before opening one: while one player monitors the process, the others can watch the surrounding area. The goal is to maintain the team’s awareness while the alarm is sounding.

Two Important Limitations for Kings Canyon and the Mythic Volt

Kings Canyon Evolved should not be presented as a map update launching alongside Cipher. This rework is part of the Season 32 plan for early 2027. The Cryptic Core version of the Mythic Volt, meanwhile, is being promoted as possible content from the Cipher Seasonal Pack. Regional restrictions apply, and it will not be available in every region. Purchasing a pack does not guarantee that you will receive this cosmetic.

Itemgold’s Take

When preparing for Cipher, our first priority would be understanding the team’s flow of information before focusing on the list of cosmetics. Crypto’s vision and the Strongholds alarm could affect decisions about when an engagement may begin. It will make more sense to reach a final assessment once the season is live. If you are considering a separate cosmetic purchase, you can browse the ItemGold Apex Coins category and the 1,000 Apex Coins product for the EA App. Check this product’s PC/EA App and account requirements; it does not imply automatic compatibility with other platforms or guarantee the Mythic Volt.

FAQ

Are the Cipher features currently available in the live game?

This content covers the official gameplay preview for the upcoming season. It should not be used as a live patch, a finalized numerical balance sheet, or a confirmed release time.

How will Crypto’s new drone work?

It will run on a battery and can be retrieved and redeployed. Sentry Mode will mark enemies within the drone’s field of view for the team.

Will the Akimbo Wingman deal twice the damage?

Dual Wingman use has been announced, but this does not directly imply twice the damage. The final in-game stats are required for an accurate comparison.

Why is opening a Stronghold risky?

The opening process will take time, and the alarm will reveal the location to nearby teams. The goal of obtaining valuable loot must be considered alongside perimeter security and team readiness.

Are Kings Canyon Evolved and the Mythic Volt part of the same release?

No. The map update is planned for early 2027/Season 32. The Mythic Volt is a possible pack drop subject to regional restrictions; it is not a guaranteed reward for every player or pack.
