Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that Until Dawn 2, developed by Firesprite, will launch for PlayStation 5 on January 28, 2027. The new trailer revealed a supernatural incident beginning at Blackwood Sanatorium, a ghost-hunting team called Dead True, and the return of Dr. Hill.

New Characters, New Horror Setting

Rather than directly bringing back the original game's main cast, the sequel focuses on a new group of characters.

Dead True is a team that investigates unexplained phenomena, and the story will take players from Blackwood Sanatorium to Akishima Island. The trailer shows the group's journey beginning as a filming expedition before turning into a genuine fight for survival. Peter Stormare returns as Dr. Hill. His exact role in the new story and how he will relate to the player's choices have not yet been fully explained.

The new cast also includes performers who may be familiar to Baldur's Gate 3 players, although the important details are the roles these characters play within the game itself. Story conclusions should not be drawn simply from actor recognition or visual similarities.

The Butterfly Effect System Returns

The Butterfly Effect system that defined the identity of Until Dawn will once again play a central role in the sequel.

Choices made during dialogue, exploration, and dangerous situations will affect relationships, the sequence of events, and which characters survive.

Sony says that all of the main characters can potentially be saved or lost depending on the player's decisions.

Firesprite is working with AdHoc Studio on narrative design.

The partnership is intended to strengthen the consistency of branching storylines and the consequences of player choices.

However, the total number of endings, whether save data from the first game will have any effect, and whether there will be any online sharing features have not yet been revealed.

Pricing and Editions

The standard edition is priced at $49.99 in the United States.

The Digital Deluxe Edition includes Y2K-themed outfits, additional cosmetic content related to Dr. Hill, and digital bonuses such as the Diorama of Death.

Preorders opened on September 10. Certain Dr. Hill cosmetics and decorative items are also included among the preorder rewards.

There is no official indication that these bonuses provide gameplay advantages. Current descriptions position them as cosmetic and collectible content.

The Biggest Questions Before Launch

It has not yet been revealed how the sequel will treat the events and multiple possible endings of the first game.

Because Until Dawn had many different outcomes, Firesprite may either choose a canonical ending or keep the sequel largely independent from the fates of the original cast.

Dr. Hill's return creates a clear connection between the two games, but it does not confirm save-data transfer.

On the technical side, players are still waiting for details about 30 FPS and 60 FPS modes, ray tracing, storage requirements, and accessibility options.

The timing of quick-time events, motion controls, and options that help players reconsider or recover from decisions can be especially important in narrative games.

The visibility of Deluxe Edition cosmetics during actual gameplay may also be limited. For that reason, players should evaluate the price difference based on how the bonuses are actually used rather than simply on their names.

The review embargo and preload timing should also be confirmed during launch week.
