ArenaNet is significantly changing the way combat and movement work in Guild Wars 3. An early build shown at Gamescom combines systems such as wall-running, gliding, climbing, momentum-powered attacks, and knocking enemies into the environment as part of the same gameplay loop.

Movement Is More Than Just a Way to Travel

According to early previews, a character's movement speed can directly affect the impact of an attack. Strikes performed while descending from a high point or attacks initiated with running momentum can produce more powerful results.

Running along walls, grabbing onto ledges, and gliding also influence more than simply how players navigate the map. These mechanics can directly affect positioning during combat.

The physics-based knockback system is another major part of this approach. Enemies can be slammed into walls or, when positioned correctly, pushed off cliffs.

The size and weight of an enemy affect the strength of the result, meaning the same ability will not send every target flying the same distance. ArenaNet's goal is to expand traditional ability rotations by incorporating the environment and movement speed directly into combat.

Smaller Battles, More Readable Combat

Guild Wars 2's open-world events can sometimes gather dozens of players around the same target. In Guild Wars 3, large open-world encounters are being designed around approximately 20 players in an effort to keep the new combat system visually readable.

Party sizes are currently targeted at four players, while the same limitation is not expected to apply to social cities and hubs.

This does not necessarily mean the game will be less social. ArenaNet is aiming to create a world with fewer server barriers, fewer loading screens, and systems that bring players together for suitable activities more naturally.

However, the 20-player figure is currently a development target rather than a confirmed technical limit for the final game.

More Flexibility for Players With Busy Schedules

Developer presentations have emphasized that the MMO should not require players to spend long hours in the game every day and should still offer meaningful progress during shorter play sessions.

How this philosophy will affect quest structure, daily rewards, and seasonal systems has not yet been explained in detail.

The goal of creating a "less demanding MMO" is significant, but the game's economy and progression systems will need to be revealed before players can properly judge how successfully this approach has been implemented.

The story takes players to the region of Orr roughly a thousand years before the events of the original Guild Wars.

Choosing this period gives ArenaNet the opportunity to show familiar locations in very different forms while also offering a new starting point that does not depend heavily on characters and events from the previous games.

Beta and Platform Plans

Guild Wars 3 has been announced for PC and PlayStation 5. A beta is currently targeted for fall 2027, while a full release date has not yet been announced.

Xbox and Nintendo Switch 2 versions have not been confirmed.

A Steam page is already available, allowing PC players to add the game to their wishlists, although pricing and edition details have yet to be revealed.

What Does the Beta Need to Prove?

One of the first major tests for the fall 2027 beta will be whether the physics-based movement systems remain consistent on higher-latency connections.

If an enemy knocked back by one player appears in a different position for other party members, precise combos and environmental kills could become unreliable.
