Epic Games expanded the Sprite system and introduced new gameplay options for Battle Royale with the Fortnite v42.10 update, released on September 3, 2026. The most notable additions include community-designed Sprites, a reworked mastery system, and a retro-inspired mode called Big Head.

Four New Sprites Have Joined the Game

The update adds X-Ray Sprite, Onigiri Sprite, Mega Man Sprite, and Overshield Sprite.

X-Ray and Onigiri are based on winning designs from the Design A Sprite competition. The Mega Man crossover connects Capcom's classic franchise with Fortnite's ongoing cosmetic and gameplay collaborations, while Overshield Sprite expands the available defensive options.

The amount of Sprite Dust required to summon a Mastered Sprite has also been reduced by half.

In addition, the new mastery path gives players who use Sprites a clearer progression goal. If a player receives a duplicate of a Sprite they have already unlocked, the duplicate is now converted into mastery experience rather than becoming useless.

This makes the collection loop more rewarding by ensuring repeated drops still contribute to progression.

When Did Big Head and the Other Modes Become Available?

According to Epic's September 3 patch notes, Big Head, Prop Hunt, Action Hero, and Sharpshooter were scheduled to become available the following Thursday.

Big Head uses intentionally exaggerated character proportions reminiscent of retro multiplayer game modes.

This does not mean that the balance of the main Battle Royale mode has been permanently altered. Big Head is positioned as a separate gameplay experience.

The update also includes new Loot Hack options and adjustments to the Sweeper Shotgun.

To properly evaluate the weapon's performance, players should look beyond raw damage numbers and consider spread, fire rate, and its position in the current seasonal meta.

For competitive players, even relatively small spread adjustments can directly affect reliability in close-range encounters.

How Could the Update Affect the In-Game Economy?

Faster Sprite mastery progression may change which rewards players choose to spend time pursuing.

Turning duplicates into experience makes collection progression less frustrating, while the value of event-based Sprites will depend on how long they remain available and whether they return in the future.

Unless Epic explicitly confirms permanent rarity, claims in community channels that certain Sprites will "never return" should not be treated as reliable.

When it comes to the Battle Pass and Item Shop, free gameplay additions such as Big Head should be considered separately from paid cosmetics.

A skin appearing in a new mode does not mean that its bundle is automatically granted to the player's account.

Before spending V-Bucks, players should check the contents of a bundle, refund eligibility, and which modes support the item.

Competitive players should also wait for official competitive notes to confirm whether Sweeper Shotgun changes are reflected in tournament playlists.

Small hotfixes released after a major update can quickly modify the values introduced in the original patch.

Mastery experience earned through daily and weekly quests may also change as the season progresses, so players should rely on current in-game values rather than third-party calculators.

Matchmaking times and regional server activity should also be taken into account when choosing which modes to play.
